Step 1: Students Read to Themselves

• Students are given a reading booklet to read on their own.
• After reading, students are asked to retell the teacher what they read.
• The teacher marks down if they were able to summarize the main events in order and with confidence.

Step 2: Students Read Aloud to Teacher 

• Students read the same reading booklet aloud to the teacher.
• The teacher marks down any errors and self-corrections the student makes while they read and also how many words they read correctly in one minute. 
• When done, students are asked comprehension questions to see if they understood the reading.
• The teacher goes through the assessment with the student and discusses goals and strategies.
